When Was the Quran Written and Who Wrote It?

The Quran is the final and unaltered word of Allah, revealed to the last Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH), through the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel). The revelation began in 610 CE in the Cave of Hira and continued over 23 years until the Prophet’s passing in 632 CE. The Quran was preserved through memorization and written records by the Prophet’s companions. After the Prophet’s passing, it was compiled into a single book under the leadership of Abu Bakr (RA) and later standardized by Caliph Uthman ibn Affan (RA) to ensure its preservation without any changes.

Who Wrote the Quran?

The Quran was not written by any human; rather, it is the divine word of Allah, revealed directly to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Prophet’s companions, including Zaid bin Thabit (RA), recorded the revelations on materials such as parchment, bones, and palm leaves. The Quran we have today remains exactly as it was revealed, with no alterations or modifications, as promised by Allah in Surah Al-Hijr (15:9):

"Indeed, We have sent down the Reminder (the Quran), and indeed, We will be its guardian."

5 Holy Books of Islam and Their Prophets

Islam teaches that Allah revealed divine books to different Prophets for the guidance of humanity:

1. Tawrat (Torah) – Given to Prophet Musa (Moses) (PBUH)

2. Zabur (Psalms) – Given to Prophet Dawud (David) (PBUH)

3. Injeel (Gospel) – Given to Prophet Isa (Jesus) (PBUH)

4. Suhuf Ibrahim (Scrolls of Abraham) – Given to Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) (PBUH)

5. Quran – The final revelation, given to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

Among these, only the Quran remains unchanged, while the previous scriptures were altered by human hands.

The Quran was revealed in Classical Arabic, the purest and most eloquent language. While it has been translated into English and many other languages, these translations are considered interpretations of its meaning, as the true Quran is only in Arabic. Every Muslim is encouraged to learn and understand its teachings in their language while reciting it in Arabic for worship.
